Where did you go?

In the last lesson, every passé composé used avoir: j'ai patiné, nous avons mangé. But some verbs use être instead. Most of them are about moving or changing place: going, coming, arriving, leaving, going up, going down...

  • Je suis allé au parc. I went to the park.
  • Elle est arrivée à 10 h. She arrived at 10 o'clock.

You know the present of être from Grade 5: je suis, tu es, il/elle/on est, nous sommes, vous êtes, ils/elles sont.

monter / descendreresterentrer, arriver, venirsortir, partir, allertomber, naître, rentrer, revenir...
The house of être: most être verbs describe moving in, out, up, down, coming, going, staying or changing.

Être verbs agree!

With être, the past participle acts like an adjective: it matches the subject. You learned adjective agreement in Grade 5 (petit, petite, petits, petites). It's the same idea:

  • a boy: Il est allé
  • a girl: Elle est allée (+ e)
  • boys, or a mixed group: Ils sont allés (+ s)
  • only girls: Elles sont allées (+ es)

With je, tu, nous and vous, think about who is speaking. A girl writes Je suis allée. Two girls write Nous sommes allées.

Most of the time you can't hear the difference, so this is a writing skill: look for it when you edit.

one boyIl est allé.(no ending)one girlElle est allée.+ eboys, or a mixed groupIls sont allés.+ sonly girlsElles sont allées.+ es
With être, the past participle matches the subject, like an adjective: -e for a girl, -s for a group, -es for a group of only girls.

Aller and partir in the passé composé. The agreement depends on who the subject is. With on meaning "we", many writers add -s for a group.

Let's read a camp journal

Clara

  1. Features of a journal: a date for each entry, the word je (it's personal), events in time order, feelings (Quelle belle journée !) and the writer's name.
  2. Who is writing? Clara, a girl. Look: je suis restée, je suis montée: the -e shows the writer is a girl.
  3. Être verbs: nous sommes partis, nous sommes arrivés, Kai est monté, je suis restée, je suis montée, nous sommes rentrés, Personne n'est tombé, le soleil est revenu, nous sommes allées, Les garçons sont restés, mes parents sont venus.
  4. Agreement detective: nous sommes partis (the whole mixed group: -s); Nour et moi, nous sommes allées (two girls: -es); mes parents sont venus (parents is a masculine plural word, so -s).
  5. Avoir verbs are still there: tout le monde a mis, il a commencé. These are not verbs of moving from place to place, so they use avoir.
  6. New words: les pagaies = the paddles; le feu de camp = the campfire; le spectacle = the show.
  7. Safety in the text: everyone wears a life jacket, and counsellors are on the beach. Personne n'est tombé = Nobody fell.

On Monday the campers canoed and came back in the rain; nobody fell in. On Tuesday the sun came back, Clara and Nour went to the beach, and Clara's parents came for the show.

Canoes pulled up on a sandy beach next to paddles and orange life jackets, with a dock and pine forest by a lake.
Nous sommes arrivés au lac. Canoe trips like the one in the camp journal often start from a beach like this one. AI-generated image

Avoir or être?

Ask: is the verb in the house of être? (going, coming, arriving, leaving, going in, going out, going up, going down, staying, falling, being born, dying, returning, becoming.)

  • Yes → être, and make the participle agree: Elle est sortie.
  • No → avoir, and no agreement with the subject: Elle a mangé. (not mangée)

Tip: Il a fait, il a mis, il a pris use avoir, even though they are irregular.

Just for fun

The house of être must be the busiest house in French: everyone is arriving, leaving, going in, going out, going up and coming down. Nobody ever just sits down to eat in there... because manger is an avoir verb! 🏠😄

Worked example

Let's write a journal entry together

Write 4 sentences for a girl named Mia who went to her grandmother's place on Saturday. She left at 9 o'clock, arrived at 10 o'clock, stayed all day and came home at 6 p.m.

  1. Date first: Samedi 10 octobre 2026.
  2. partir → partie (Mia is a girl): Je suis partie à 9 h.
  3. arriver → arrivée: Je suis arrivée chez ma grand-mère à 10 h. (chez = at someone's home)
  4. rester → restée: Je suis restée toute la journée.
  5. rentrer → rentrée: Je suis rentrée à la maison à 18 h. (Remember: 18 h = 6 p.m.)
  6. Check: every être verb ends in -ée because the writer is a girl.

Samedi 10 octobre 2026. Je suis partie à 9 h. Je suis arrivée chez ma grand-mère à 10 h. Je suis restée toute la journée. Je suis rentrée à la maison à 18 h.

Hands-on activity

Map my trip

You need: paper, coloured pencils.

  1. Think of a real outing: a trip to the store, the library, a park, a relative's home or a hockey game.
  2. Draw a simple map: your home, the place you went, and arrows for the trip there and back.
  3. Label each arrow with an être verb in French: je suis parti(e), je suis arrivé(e), je suis entré(e), je suis sorti(e), je suis rentré(e).
  4. Under the map, write a dated journal entry of 5 or 6 sentences. Use at least 4 être verbs and 2 avoir verbs (for example j'ai acheté, j'ai vu).
  5. Circle every participle that ends with -e or -s, and explain to a grown-up why it has that ending.

For parents and teachers

Big idea: Students read a personal journal, notice its features (C2) and follow a sequence of past events (C1). They write their own journal entry (D1) and edit for the avoir/être choice and participle agreement (D2).

How to help:

  • Learn the être verbs in opposite pairs: aller/venir, arriver/partir, entrer/sortir, monter/descendre, naître/mourir.
  • Act them out: walk in the door and say Je suis entré(e), go upstairs and say Je suis monté(e).
  • When editing, have your child ask "Who is the subject? A girl, a boy, a group?" before checking the ending.

Common difficulties:

  • J'ai allé instead of Je suis allé(e). This is the most common mistake; praise every correct je suis allé(e).
  • Adding agreement with avoir (elle a mangée). Agreement goes with être only (at this level).
  • Because you can't hear the agreement, this is mostly an editing skill. That's normal.

Safety: The canoe story models good water safety (life jackets, adults present). If your family paddles, the same rules apply.

Canadian French used (heard in Québec and other parts of Canada): un canot (canoe), un moniteur / une monitrice (camp counsellor).
