Welcome to Grade 6 reading and writing in French! In Grade 5 you read and wrote emails, interviews, posters, invitations, recipes, reviews, fact cards and a short story, using the present tense, the four big verbs, questions, negatives, adjectives, the futur proche and commands. This year you will learn to tell what happened, convince a reader and connect with French speakers across Canada.
You will read a news article, a blog, a camp journal, a comic, a notice of rules, ads, poems, a formal letter and a magazine page, and you will write your own versions. Along the way you will learn the passé composé with avoir and être, reflexive verbs (je me lève), -ir and -re verbs, pouvoir, vouloir, devoir, comparisons (plus ... que, le meilleur), all the possessive adjectives, the difference between familiar and formal French, and Canadian French conventions for prices, numbers, dates and addresses. You will make inferences, check your own understanding, and finish with a personal narrative that goes through every stage of the writing process. Canadian French words are labelled as you go.
Explanations are in English so a child and a parent can learn together, even if no one at home speaks French. The companion unit Listening and Speaking covers the oral strands.
Curriculum expectations covered: C1, C2, C3, D1, D2, D3 (The Ontario Curriculum: French as a Second Language, Core French, Grades 4–8, 2013, Grade 6 overall expectations).
