The four busiest verbs in French

In Grade 4 you learned je suis and j'ai. Those come from two of the most important French verbs: être (to be) and avoir (to have). Two more verbs are just as busy: aller (to go) and faire (to do, to make).

These four verbs are irregular: they don't follow the -er recipe. You have to learn them by heart, but you will see them in almost every French text you read!

The four big irregular verbs in the present tense.

Don't mix up est and et, a and à, ont and sont

  • est = is (Il est grand). et = and.
  • a = has (Elle a un chat). à = to / at (à Moncton).
  • ils ont = they have. ils sont = they are.

These pairs sound alike, so read the whole sentence to check the meaning.

Expressions with the big verbs

French uses these verbs in expressions that are different from English:

  • avoir for feelings in your body: avoir faim (to be hungry), avoir soif (thirsty), avoir chaud (hot), avoir froid (cold), avoir peur (scared), and your age: avoir dix ans.
  • aller à + a place. à + le joins to make au: Je vais au parc. à + les makes aux: Nous allons aux magasins. But à la and à l' stay: à la piscine, à l'école, à l'aréna.
  • faire de + an activity. de + le joins to make du: faire du vélo (to bike), faire du ski, faire du camping. With a feminine word: faire de la natation (to swim). Before a vowel: faire de l'escalade (to go climbing).
  • faire for weather (Grade 4): Il fait froid. Il fait beau.
A park path in autumn with benches, red and orange maple trees and a playground.
Je vais au parc. Remember: à + le becomes au. On a cool fall day you might also say: J'ai froid! AI-generated image

à + le = au, à + les = aux, de + le = du. With la and l', nothing joins.

Let's read an email from a pen pal

Léa lives in Moncton, New Brunswick. Read her email to Sam, a Grade 5 student in Ontario.

De : Léa

À : Sam

Objet : Bonjour de Moncton !

Salut Sam !

Je m'appelle Léa et j'ai dix ans. Je suis en cinquième année. J'habite à Moncton, au Nouveau-Brunswick. Ma famille est acadienne.

Le samedi, je vais à la piscine avec mon frère. Nous faisons de la natation. Mes parents vont au marché. En hiver, nous allons à l'aréna et nous faisons du patin. Mon frère a douze ans. Il est très sportif !

Et toi ? Tu as des frères ou des sœurs ? Qu'est-ce que tu fais la fin de semaine ?

À bientôt !

Léa

  1. Features of an email: De (From), À (To), Objet (Subject), a greeting, the message in short paragraphs, a closing and the sender's name.
  2. Greeting and closing: Salut Sam ! and À bientôt ! are friendly: Léa writes to a kid her age, so she uses tu.
  3. être: Je suis en cinquième année (I'm in Grade 5). Ma famille est acadienne. Il est très sportif.
  4. avoir: j'ai dix ans, Mon frère a douze ans, Tu as des frères ?
  5. aller: je vais à la piscine, Mes parents vont au marché, nous allons à l'aréna.
  6. faire: Nous faisons de la natation, nous faisons du patin (we skate, a common way to say it in Canadian French), Qu'est-ce que tu fais ?

Léa is 10, in Grade 5, Acadian, and lives in Moncton. On Saturdays she swims with her brother; in winter the family skates at the arena. She asks Sam about his brothers and sisters and his weekend (la fin de semaine, Canadian French).

Courriel: a Canadian word

In Canada an email is un courriel (from courrier électronique, electronic mail). You may also see un e-mail or un mail, which are common in France. On Canadian government and school websites, you will usually see courriel.

Just for fun

In French you don't be ten years old, you have ten years: J'ai dix ans. So every birthday, you get to collect one more year, like adding a card to your collection!

Worked example

Let's write a reply together

Help Sam answer Léa's two questions. Sam has one sister who is 8. On weekends, he goes to the park and bikes.

  1. Greeting for a pen pal: Salut Léa !
  2. Question 1 (brothers or sisters): J'ai une sœur. Elle a huit ans. (avoir for age!)
  3. Question 2 (weekend): La fin de semaine, je vais au parc et je fais du vélo. (à + le = au; de + le = du)
  4. Ask a question back: Est-ce que tu fais du ski ?
  5. Closing: À bientôt ! Sam

Salut Léa ! J'ai une sœur. Elle a huit ans. La fin de semaine, je vais au parc et je fais du vélo. Est-ce que tu fais du ski ? À bientôt ! Sam

For parents and teachers

Big idea: The curriculum asks Grade 5 students to write for different purposes and audiences (D1), to use French sociolinguistic conventions appropriately in their writing, such as choosing tu or vous and fitting greetings and closings (D3), to identify the features of text forms like emails (C2), and to read about aspects of culture in French-speaking communities (C3), here an Acadian pen pal in New Brunswick. Editing verb forms supports D2.

Common difficulties:

  • Je suis 10 ans / Je suis faim. English "be" often becomes avoir in French. Make a list on the fridge: avoir faim, soif, chaud, froid, peur, ... ans.
  • à le / de le. Practise: au parc, du vélo.
  • vous faisez. Faire is irregular: vous faites. (Also vous êtes.)
  • est / et and a / à in writing. Have your child reread aloud: does it mean is or and?

Canadian French used: un courriel (email), la fin de semaine (weekend), l'aréna (arena), faire du patin (to skate).

Online safety: The email activity should be done with an adult and only with people your family knows.
