Learning through play across five areas of development

The same program is used for kindergarten for 4-year-olds and 5-year-olds (Maternelle 4 ans / 5 ans).

Below is how the official curriculum organizes it. Each strand will get full lessons like the ones in Grade 1 Mathematics.

Curriculum strands

Increases physical and motor development: body awareness, gross and fine motor skills, space and time, food, relaxation, hygiene and safety

Builds self-awareness: own needs and characteristics, expressing and regulating emotions, autonomy, confidence

Maintains harmonious relationships with others: group participation, collaboration, rules of conduct, resolving conflicts

Communicates using oral and written language: vocabulary, phonological awareness, letters of the alphabet, reading and writing conventions

Discovers the world around them: early mathematics, science and technology, social sciences and the arts; reasoning and imagination
