Bienvenue ! Grade 4 is the first year of Core French in Ontario. In this unit you will learn to listen to and speak French in everyday situations. You will greet people politely (and learn when to use tu and vous), use clever strategies to understand French and ask for help, introduce yourself, count from 0 to 31 and say your age, talk about days, months, dates and birthdays, describe the weather and seasons, name colours and classroom things, talk about your family and pets, and say what you like and don't like. You will also meet French-speaking communities in Canada: Franco-Ontarians, Québécois, Acadians and others, and learn how the Métis language Michif mixes French and Cree. At the end you will plan, rehearse and give a short presentation about yourself.
Every new word has a sound-it-out spelling so a grown-up who doesn't speak French can help too. Every lesson has examples to listen to, a hands-on activity, lots of practice and a short quiz. The sibling unit, Reading and Writing in French, uses the same vocabulary themes for reading and writing.
Curriculum expectations covered: A1.1, A1.2, A2.1, A2.2, A2.3, A3 (intercultural understanding), B1.1, B1.2, B1.3, B2.1, B2.2, B2.3, B3 (intercultural understanding), B3.2 (The Ontario Curriculum: French as a Second Language, Core French, Grade 4, 2013).
