B2.3 B2.4 B2.5About 40 minutes
Learning goals
  • I can read words with a silent e, like cake, kite, hope and cube.
  • I can read vowel teams like ai, ay, ee, ea, oa, ow and igh.
  • I can read words where r changes the vowel, like car, fork and bird.

Words to know

long vowel
A vowel sound that says the letter's own name: /ā/ in cake, /ē/ in tree, /ī/ in kite, /ō/ in boat, /ū/ in cube.
silent e (magic e)
An e at the end of a word that makes no sound but makes the vowel before it say its name, like in cape.
vowel team
Two letters that work together to make one vowel sound, like ai in rain.
bossy r
When r comes after a vowel and changes its sound, like ar in car.

Magic e

Read this word: cap. 🧢 Short a, /a/.

Now add an e to the end: cape. 🦸

The e is silent. It makes no sound. But it reaches back over the consonant and makes the a say its own name: /ā/. That's why some people call it magic e!

Magic e is silent, but it reaches back over the consonant and makes the vowel say its name.
Worked example

Let's read a magic e word

Read: bike

  1. Look at the end. Is there an e after a consonant? Yes: b-i-k-e.
  2. So the i says its name: /ī/. The e is silent.
  3. Blend: /b/ /ī/ /k/ → bike. 🚲

The word is bike. It has 4 letters but only 3 sounds.

Vowel teams

Sometimes two vowels team up. Often the team makes a long vowel sound. Here are the most common teams:

TeamSoundWords
ai/ā/rain 🌧️, train 🚂, snail 🐌, paint
ay/ā/day, play, say, tray
ee/ē/tree 🌳, bee 🐝, feet, sleep
ea/ē/leaf 🍁, seal 🦭, eat, beach
oa/ō/boat ⛵, coat 🧥, road, soap
ow/ō/snow ❄️, slow, grow, bowl
igh/ī/night 🌙, light, high
ie/ī/pie 🥧, tie, lie
oo/oo/moon 🌙, spoon 🥄, food, boot
Vowel teams

Where does the team go?

ai usually goes in the middle of a word (rain, train).

ay usually goes at the end (day, play).

This tip helps you choose when you spell!

trainai in the middleplayay at the endtrainplay
Both teams say /ā/. ai usually goes in the middle of a word, and ay usually goes at the end.

Watch out for ow

The team ow can make two sounds:

  • /ō/ as in snow and slow
  • /ow/ as in cow 🐄 and now (like when you get hurt: "ow!")

Try one sound. If it isn't a real word, try the other. oi and oy say /oi/ (coin, boy), and ou says /ow/ (out, cloud).

Bossy r

When r comes right after a vowel, it is bossy. It changes the vowel's sound!

  • ar says /ar/: car 🚗, star ⭐, farm, park
  • or says /or/: fork 🍴, corn 🌽, horse 🐴, storm
  • er, ir and ur all say /er/: her, fern, bird 🐦, girl, fur, turn, purple
Just for fun

Why is magic e such a good friend?

It never says a word. It just helps the other vowels say their names! 🪄

Worked example

Let's read a vowel team word

Read: train

  1. Look for letter teams. tr is a blend. ai is a vowel team.
  2. ai says /ā/.
  3. Blend: /t/ /r/ /ā/ /n/ → train. 🚂

The word is train.

Hands-on activity

Magic e wand

You need: a craft stick or pencil, paper, tape, and a marker.

  1. Write a big e on a small square of paper and tape it to the stick. That's your magic e wand!
  2. A grown-up writes these words with space after them: cap, kit, hop, cub, pin, tap, not.
  3. Read each word. Then hold your wand at the end of the word and read it again with the long vowel.

Answers: cap → cape, kit → kite, hop → hope, cub → cube, pin → pine, tap → tape, not → note.

For parents and teachers

Big idea: Grade 1 students learn the most common letter-sound pairs for vowels, including long vowels, silent e (CVCe), common vowel teams, and r-controlled vowels (B2.3, B2.4). They also begin to notice position-based spelling tendencies like ai in the middle and ay at the end (B2.5).

How to help at home:

  • Teach your child to scan the whole word first. Is there an e at the end? Is there a vowel team?
  • Make word pairs: hop/hope, tap/tape, kit/kite, and read them back and forth.
  • Make a vowel team poster with one picture per team (rain, tree, boat, night, moon).

Common difficulties:

  • Ignoring the final e (reading "cape" as "cap"). Have them underline the e and draw an arrow back to the vowel.
  • Too many patterns at once. This lesson is a map. Spend several days on magic e before moving to vowel teams, and several more before bossy r.
  • Patterns with two sounds (ow in snow and cow, oo in moon and book). Teach "try one, then try the other" and check that it makes a real word.

Note on terms: "magic e" and "bossy r" are friendly nicknames. Teachers may also say "silent e" and "r-controlled vowels".
